"The Alamo," released in 2004, starred Billy Bob Thornton as David Crockett, Dennis Quaid as Sam Houston, and Jason Patric as Jim Bowie. Playing “Davy” as a celebrity struggling to come to terms with the public image he created, some have called it Thornton’s greatest performance. In his review, movie critic Roger Ebert wrote that a highlight of the film comes as Crockett is asked about his legendary feats. Ebert wrote, “And then we watch Crockett with a rueful smile as he patiently explains that he did not do and cannot do any of those things and that his reputation has a life apart from his reality.”
