Growing up, future president Theodore Roosevelt Jr. read stories about David Crockett and developed an appreciation for the frontiersman’s love of hunting. In September 1883, Roosevelt made his first trip to the American West, after which he began a lifelong passion for nature and conservation. In this photo, taken by George Grantham Bain in 1885, Roosevelt is seen in the buckskin, moccasins, and animal fur cap that became so closely associated with Crockett.
